Haere Mai - Welcome

Poetica: The Christchurch Urban Poetry Project aims to bring poetry to the streets of Ōtautahi via visual art, installations, and public performance.  Working in collaboration with other arts and community organizations, and in conjunction with poets, artists, and an amazing crew of volunteers, Poetica's goal is to get people to engage with poetry in new and innovative ways and to help make our post-quake city an interesting and exciting place to be.

The Poetica Story

Poetica was founded in 2012 by Christchurch resident, Elise van Bentem.  Inspired by the "Poems on Walls" initiative in Leiden, The Netherlands, Elise wanted to bring poetry to the streets of Christchurch as a way to commemorate those who had lost their lives in the earthquakes, and also as a means of re-introducing the city to its citizens after so much of it had changed.

Through the art of poetry, Poetica wants to invite the public on a journey that will lead to establishing a greater connection with the city; this involves the meeting of past and present, the acknowledgement of those that have gone before us, and ideas about what we want for our city and its citizens.
